Aline Kominsky-Crumb (1948–2022)

Aline & Bob Crumb

Aline Kominsky-Crumb was one of the most influential Jewish artists in the medium of comics. That is saying something, considering some of the most iconic comic book mythos have been written and illustrated by Jews. From Superman, Batman, Spider-man, the Fantastic Four, the Black Panther, Jessica Jones, Miles Morales and many more. The importance of using the medium of comic art has been criminally underutilized. Yes you can tell tales of other worlds and heroes with miraculous powers. But Aline understood the power of telling real stories.

Aline Kominsky-Crumb might be best described as one of the pioneers of the autobiographical comic form and co-founder of the women’s underground comics movement. Kominsky-Crumb's work is known for its unvarnished, confessional nature and Jewish humor.

Aline might have been the better half of Robert. Every artist yearns for a muse, and Aline seems to inspire Roberts work beyond just "good" together, Aline and Roberts revolutionized the world of underground comix and the legitimacy of comic book as a unique artform.

In 2016, Comics Alliance listed Kominsky-Crumb as one of twelve women cartoonists deserving of lifetime achievement recognition.

Aline was born on August 1, 1948 and passed away on November 29, 2022.
